The work behind the name: JDRF

There are many reasons why we chose JDRF to fundraise for this summer, aside from our personal connections to the foundation! Just look at all the great work they've done over the years (since 1970) and continue to work towards today. From the education and awareness about diabetes they introduce and reinforce, to the advancements in medicine and improvements in quality of life they produce.

JDRF, the leading organization in diabetes research, has a mission
to discover, develop and deliver advances that cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). They continue to focus on transforming the lives of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

JDRF wants a cure and will not stop until they find one. The progress they make each day provides new treatments and therapies that make day-to-day life with T1D easier, safer and healthier.

Knowledge about T1D and Daily Living with T1D:

T1D, although not entirely understood, is
an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin (a hormone people need to get energy from food). The causes that play a role in a person's life, scientists believe, are both genetic factors and environmental triggers. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure. In the early days, the disease was commonly referred to as “juvenile diabetes” because of its strong association with young children. Today, it is equally diagnosed in the number of children as adults; 110 per day.

Living with T1D, a person needs to balance many aspects of their care such as regularly monitoring blood-sugar levels, injections or insulin pump basal rates and boluses, in conjunction with their eating and daily activities throughout the day.

While people with T1D rely on insulin therapy to control their blood sugar, insulin is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious side effects. Even with intensive disease management, a significant portion of their day is still spent with high or low blood-sugar levels, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation.

JDRF Success and Funding:

Something they are currently celebrating as a result of donations, research, and development has been the Artificial Pancreas. Read more about this exciting breakthrough.

Every bit of donations they receive goes towards the research they execute. So the funds we raise at Top Golf this August, will enable JDRF to advance even more research.

Team ELM wants to support the JDRF goal, turning Type One into Type None.

Find out more information about the good JDRF does and the future goals of the nonprofit organization by visiting their website.

We look forward to doing our part to make a difference in the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes through this summer's Fundraiser at Top Golf! Refer to our recent blog, Rise and Shine: Golf For a Cure, to learn about the event, ticket information, and more.

XOXO,

How To Keep Your Skills SHARP!

7/19/2017

School's out, summer's getting hot, and all is well and good in the world! At Team ELM, we are certainly enjoying these warm weather and sunny days, and we hope you are too. We got to thinking though, school is coming back around, faster than you think, and we wanted to check in with you about all the hard work you put in last year.

You work hard all year long with our Team ELM tutors, learning as much as you can, and putting those skills to work. For this year, let's do things a little differently and get ahead of the game. We want you to feel ready to tackle this next year in school!

How fresh are your math and reading skills? Let's brush off the sand from the beach and put those skills to good use. Our tutors are ready to help you in anyway they can. Set up a time to practice your reading with a great book, schedule a math session with your tutor, and stay on top of your summer assignments.

Call us to set up a weekly summer tutoring schedule today!

Rise and Shine: Golf For a Cure

Each year we pick an organization that is close to one of our families or staff to give back to. Last year we picked Alzheimer's Disease, as it is close to Team ELM's owner. This year we picked something that many of our families are affected by, Diabetes.

We feel incredibly lucky that we get to share in the joys of our families' lives. The trials and tribulations our families go through are no different. Diabetes is everyday for our families. And whether it's a good day or a bad one for you, we are always by your side. Our hope is that we do all we can to make your bad days a little brighter, with the hope of a cure for Diabetes!

The fundraisers we have throughout the year are always a joy and very successful, but we want to do MORE! This summer we bring you a fun and family filled day at TOPGOLF! This open event is open to the public. We look forward to meeting more of the people who are close to you as well. Please share the flyer below with anyone who you think would be interested! Get your tickets soon so that you too can join our Team ELM family this August for a day of golf, food, family, fun, and much more!
